Our Story
For 45 years, N.K. BHANDARI, Architecture & Engineering, P.C. (NKB) has evolved from a small, family-owned construction business into a well-established professional service organization. We value uncompromising integrity, professionalism, and creativity. From the beginning, our focus has been on design excellence and technical expertise. We ensure the delivery of quality services by integrating design and construction techniques, exploring alternatives, and finding the optimal solutions for each project.
Despite humble beginnings, Narindar K. Bhandari, P.E., Ph.D., the founder of NKB, discovered his true passion for construction and engineering. He had also become all too familiar with the corruption in the construction industry in his native India. Knowing he could not single-handedly correct these unsavory business practices, Narindar decided to leave his country and start fresh, bringing his personal and professional integrity to new ventures.
Before founding his own construction company in 1978, Narindar worked as a baker and a construction laborer in Canada. He progressed to a senior leadership position at a construction company in Binghamton, NY, while earning a Ph.D. in construction management at Binghamton University.
In 1980, Narindar founded N.K. Bhandari, Consulting Engineer, as a sole proprietorship offering structural engineering and construction management services to various federal, state, and institutional clients throughout Upstate New York. Narindar gradually expanded NKB’s services to include architecture and civil engineering, while also extending its geographic range throughout the Northeast United States.
In 1988, Narindar restructured the design firm as a professional corporation under the name N.K. Bhandari, Consulting Engineers, P.C. The firm was subsequently honored to become certified as a New York State Minority Business Enterprise and a NYS Department of Transportation Disadvantaged Business Enterprise. It also became a U.S. 8(a) small business program participant. During this time, Narindar continued to establish NKB as a sought-after consulting firm, providing services to various state agencies, as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Postal Service.
Throughout the firm’s early history, NKB aligned its efforts with Bhandari Constructors and Consultants, Inc (BCCI), the general construction firm Narindar founded in 1978. For more than three decades, BCCI held a leadership position in the New York State construction industry, developing major state and federal projects throughout the Northeast. This collaboration profoundly influenced the design professionals at NKB, honing their knowledge in all aspects of construction, including estimating, scheduling, phasing, and construction sequencing. This unique perspective continues to be integrated into each project.
In 2008, Dr. Bhandari retired from NKB, and James P. Resig, P.E., LEED, who had been with the firm since 1982, assumed the role of President. The firm’s name was changed to N.K. BHANDARI, Architecture & Engineering, P.C. to reflect the full scope of services provided. In this role, Jim remained steadfastly focused on the core values of the firm while guiding its growth in abilities and market position. He also instilled in his staff the importance of work-life balance and genuine care for clients, fellow employees, and the community.
In 2015, Christopher Resig, AIA, LEED AP, DHT, Jim’s brother, became Owner and President of NKB. His tenure with the firm spanned more than 28 years, initially working with NKB from 1983 to 1995, then rejoining the firm in 2010. Under Chris’s direction, the firm’s specialties have grown and evolved, adding interior design, laboratory planning, and niche services such as laser scanning, thermal imaging, door and hardware consulting, and fire door inspection. The firm has also expanded to five geographic locations: Syracuse, NY; Buffalo, NY; New York, NY; Bethesda, MD; and Whitehall, MI, serving federal, state, municipal, educational, corporate, industrial, healthcare, commercial, retail, and hospitality clients.
In 2024, Chris announced his plans to step aside as President of NKB in 2026. In preparation for this leadership transition, Glenn R. Woodbury, AIA, LEED AP, who has worked with NKB since 2017 and served as NKB’s Architectural Practice Leader, has been promoted to Vice President. Through this transition, Glenn and Chris are carrying NKB’s legacy of uncompromising integrity, quality, professionalism, and creativity into the future.
In 2025, NKB is pleased to be celebrating 45 years of continuous business operation, having provided architecture and engineering services on more than 1,400 projects with 149 clients throughout 39 states and territories of the United States.
