Project Overview

NKB was retained by the Buffalo Public Schools Division of Plant Services and School Planning to provide a field conditions assessment report of the exterior building envelope of School #195 City Honors at Fosdick Masten, listed as one of the City of Buffalo’s local landmarks and on the National Register of Historic Places. Water infiltration causing damage to finishes has been an ongoing problem at several classrooms, and at the atrium area constructed in 2006 that is adjacent to the 1912 original building. NKB and its highly skilled team provided an exhaustive survey of conditions on all elevation and roofing systems, presented recommendations, phasing options, and an itemized cost estimate. NKB’s Infrared and visual Drone Image Capture, 3D Laser Scan (LiDAR), Hand-Held Digital Infrared Thermography, as well as multiple visual assessments helped highlight areas of deteriorated brick, terra-cotta and mortar, missing or damaged terra-cotta and slate roof tiles, copings, ridge caps, and copper cornices, soffits and fascia. All brick, slate, and terra-cotta roof and wall pieces were catalogued and prioritized by their need for immediate or eventual repair, replacement, or cleaning in order to achieve and maintain a watertight building envelope. Historic preservation and cost-effective solutions were considered for each system.

In addition to the rehabilitation work, the NKB provided several exterior lighting concepts, focusing on the western façade, that highlight the architectural features of the City Honors School.
