Project Overview
NKB provided GSA with design and construction administration services for a monumental stairway in the FDA White Oak Building 2 Atrium. NKB was responsible for the existing conditions assessment, design services, construction documents, field surveys, coordination with GSA, preparation of bidding documents, and cost estimating. NKB took particular care to consider the existing building support system, staff circulation throughout the building, and the code required protections of a multi-story atrium. The project began with an investigation and assessment of the existing structure and surrounding stairways. The area selected for the stairway had to be assessed for the possible location of structural support points and equipment locations. The stairway was designed to match the finishes of existing stairways within the FDA complex. Any structural connection to the existing structure would result in necessary structural re-evaluations and/or architectural modifications.
Multiple design configurations were presented to the GSA project managers, landing on a configuration that features two landing areas and lies adjacent to the elevator shaft. The selected design limits the spatial impact within the atrium and the visual impact from the adjacent Main Building 1.
