HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS, Oneonta, NY
Project Overview
NKB was retained by Alestalo + Etzel Architects, PC to provide structural engineering consulting services for the design and construction of this new Holiday Inn Express. NKB provided structural construction documents, bid period, and construction administration services.
The hotel, at four stories and 53,000 SF, included wood stud load-bearing walls with trussed wood floor joists and a trussed roof system. Steel beams and columns were utilized on the ground floor in select locations to ensure the structural integrity of the load path with large open spans in the lobby, pool, and exercise room. The port cochere was also designed as structural steel. The foundation, footers, and slab-on-grade were composed of reinforced concrete. The lateral load resisting system included a series of shear walls with wood sheathing rated for the wind and seismic forces. The structural design included nailing requirements for the shear wall sheathing as well as the end post and hold-down details.
Most importantly, the building’s structural design was based on the Holiday Inn Express company prototype with minor changes resulting from local building code requirements and site-specific challenges. A value engineering modification was made to the project to change from a four-inch concrete slab-on-grade to an eight-inch reinforced concrete load bearing slab to reduce foundation work and expedite the construction schedule.
